Emphasizing the importance of giving back to local communities, Governor-elect Laura Kelly and Lt. Governor-elect Lynn Rogers will hold a day of service and community celebrations across the state of Kansas on Saturday as part of the Kelly Rogers Inaugural 2019 festivities
Volunteers from each community will be organizing these free events for the public, which will include a celebration, community service project of their choice, and a screening of a new short film about Kansas by director, screenwriter and KU professor Kevin Willmott.
“Lynn and I are thrilled to share the inaugural celebrations with people across the state of Kansas, and to highlight the importance of service in our local communities,” said Kelly. “We look forward to giving back to the state that has given us both so much.”
Kelly will attend the Topeka event, and Rogers will attend the Wichita events.
Events include food, clothing, and supply drives, fundraising, and volunteering with community non-profit organizations. Other events will be added throughout the week. Locations for events include Douglas County, Finney County, Johnson County, Leavenworth County, Reno County, Saline County, Sedgwick County, and Shawnee County.
In Salina, community members are donating to Salina Shares’ “Laundry Love” initiative. This project arranges gift bags with items like laundry detergent, dryer sheets, quarters, cleaning supplies, towels, and personal hygiene products for families in need. Items currently are being collected at Ad Astra Coffee and Books, 141 N. Santa Fe, for this initiative. At 3 p.m. on Saturday, day of service volunteers will meet at Ad Astra to enjoy some refreshments and then deliver the collection baskets to Salina Shares.
The events are sponsored by the Kelly Rogers Inaugural 2019 Committee. For more information, please contact Inaugural team at community@laurakellyforkansas.com.
