Two 14-year-old Salina boys were arrested early Saturday morning in a 2001 Ford Escape stolen from Salina.

According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, two 43-year-old Salina residents — a male and female — on Saturday morning reported the Ford stolen from the 1500 block of East Iron Avenue. It was valued at $5,000. Additionally, the woman’s purse, including approximately $200 cash and IDs, was stolen from inside the couple’s residence, he said. The couple said they believed that whoever stole the purse gained entry through the sliding glass door as the front door was locked, Forrester said.

As it turned out, the two boys had entered the residence through the sliding glass door a few days earlier and awakened the couple’s daughter in her bedroom, Forrester said.

The boys were stopped by a McPherson County Sheriff’s Deputy at the Love’s truck stop along Interstate 135, Forrester said. At the time they were stopped, the vehicle had not been reported stolen and Forrester did not know why the deputy had stopped the boys, he said.

Forrester said the driver was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, felony theft, and misdemeanor theft. He was taken to the juvenile detention center in Junction City, Forrester added. The passenger was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor theft and was released to his parents, Forrester said.

The vehicle was returned to its owners, he added.
