An 81-year-old Salina woman is the latest victim of repurposed checks.

According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, the woman had placed a $30 bill payment in her mailbox for the mail carrier to pick up and take to the post office. Someone stole the check from her mailbox, washed it, wrote the check for more than $1,300, and then cashed it on Monday in the drive-thru at Great Plains Federal Credit Union, 2061 South Ohio, he said.

The woman was notified that the check had overdrawn her account, at which time she reported that she had not written a check for more than $1,300, Forrester said.

Salina Police are looking for a white male who is approximately 5’10” and in his 30s who was driving a red passenger car, he said.

Forrester urged people to be careful how they put checks in the mail and suggested that they actually place them in a U.S. Post Office owned collection box.
