Salina Police have made another arrest connected to a check stolen from a mailbox, this time from a Bennington mailbox.

A 57-year-old Bennington man reported to Salina Police that after he discovered his account was overdrawn, he contacted his bank, American State Bank, 1661 S. Ohio, and discovered that on Sept. 16, someone had altered and cashed for $1,500 a check he had originally written for $500, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said Tuesday. The man told police that he had put the check in his mailbox on Sept. 15.

The altered check was made out to David Annis. Forrester said that at the time police were investigating the Bennington man’s case, Annis, 24, was sitting in the Saline County Jail after having been arrested on suspicion of forgery in another case. Booking information lists Annis as being from Abilene.

Police detectives compared bank surveillance video to Annis’ booking photo, positively identified him, and arrested him on suspicion of the following, Forrester said.

Forrester said Salina Police believe more than one person is involved in the forgery case.
